An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth a Pound of Cure

Preventing the Worst Effects of AgingIt was Benjamin Franklin who first said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” And nowhere perhaps is this more true than in the case of the proper care and maintenance of skin.

When you are young, the skin is thick and pliable, retains more moisture, and heals from — and is more resistant to — everyday scratches, scrapes, and bruises. All these traits of strength and suppleness are due to the presence of two important proteins: collagen and elastin.

Stop Hiding: Non-Surgical Procedures That Correct Skin Problems

You  might be surprised by the number of men and women who feel stressed by having skin that is not flawless. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, approximately five percent of Americans over the age of 18 deal with suicidal thoughts when psoriasis flares up, and 26 percent forgo regular activities because of their flare ups. Those with skin disorders like rosacea are also more likely to withdraw from social activities because of their skin. Adults who suffer from acne have a harder time finding a job.

Acne, age spots, psoriasis, rosacea, spider veins, uneven skin tone, and wrinkles plague many adults across the country. If your skin is causing you embarrassment, destroying your self-confidence, or keeping you from going out and having fun, it’s time to consider a non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatment. Here are five non-surgical treatments available to you.

Candela SmoothBeam Laser

People who have dealt with acne in their teen or adult years likely have some acne scars. Candela SmoothBeam laser treatments are suitable for easing the appearance of these scars. This laser treatment also helps correct problems with skin tone or texture.

Most patients need five to eight SmoothBeam laser treatments to correct skin issues. These treatments take approximately 30 to 60 minutes and allow you to return to normal activities immediately. You can wear makeup and sunscreen right after your treatment. You may notice your skin feels swollen following the treatment, but this dissipates within a day or two.

Dermal Fillers

Juvederm, Radiesse, Restylane,Voluma and Sculptra are four popular dermal fillers that help add volume and boost collagen production. This helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Some of the fillers also help add volume to the tissue surrounding a scar, thus helping to reduce the appearance of that scar.

One thing to consider with dermal fillers is that they do need touch-up injections from time to time. Juvederm and Radiesse last for six months to a year. Restylane generally needs additional injections twice a year. Many patients find Sculptra and Voulma’s benefits to last upwards of two years.

Chemical Peel

The Chemical Peel is perfect for evening out uneven skin pigmentation, such as age spots and freckles. During the treatment, the chemical solution is applied to the face and left to sit for a specific amount of time. You leave your facial plastic surgeon’s office being a little red and with a shinny face due to the ointment that is applied.. After the peel, you need to follow a skin care regimen provided by your doctor. As the skin starts to peel away, it is important that you avoid pulling the skin off. Let the body do this on its own so that the new layers of skin reveal themselves naturally.

Pulse Dye Laser

The pulse dye laser is a suitable treatment for embarrassing skin conditions like spider veins and rosacea. The laser treatment targets the capillaries below the skin surface and then destroys them. This ends the redness associated with rosacea and also clears up the spider veins that appear on the face. Following pulse dye laser treatments your skin may appear red or even bruised.Bruising is not typically seen, but if it occurs, it fades within 10 days, but you can hide these symptoms with make-up.

Understanding Minimally Invasive Procedures

Minimally invasive procedures require little or no downtime. The Williams Rejuva Center offers a number of minimally invasive procedures including BOTOX, Restylane, Juvederm, Sculptra, Radiesse, Perlane, medicated skin creams, medical facial peels, laser treatments, and facial rejuvenation programs.

While BOTOX Cosmetic acts to relax the muscles and smooth lines, Restylane, Perlane, Radiesse, and Juvederm act to plump up or fill in lines. Medicated creams, medical facial peels, and Candela Lite Touch laser treatments are all scientifically proven to stimulate collagen production. As we age, we lose collagen, so why not stimulate it!

BOTOX Cosmetic and the new state-of-the-art dermal fillers, such as Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, and Radiesse, have transformed the war against wrinkles. BOTOX Cosmetic is used to reduce wrinkles in the forehead (parallels), around the eyes (smile lines), upper lip (vertical lip lines), and mouth. Soft tissue dermal fillers are used in creative ways to compliment each other, such as our Layering Technique. After extensive training we found that each filler has a specific purpose and/or areas in which it works the best. For example we’ve found that Restylane and Juvederm give lip enhancement a soft more natural feel where Radiesse, being a firmer product, gets a great result in the nasolabial folds and marionette lines. These products provide an ideal and safe alternative for patients who are not quite ready for surgery, or are looking for ways to maintain results for the years following their surgical procedure.

Medicated skin creams that contain Tretenoin (Retin-A) are scientifically proven to stimulate collagen production. The Williams Rejuva Center makes these creams available to our patients. We have found that, in the past, many patients have not been properly instructed on the use of these medicated creams. Our highly trained Cosmetic Nurse Specialists are here to teach you how to apply these creams to obtain their maximum benefits. Dr. Edwin Williams feels that most patients benefit from tretinoin, and has formulated this ingredient into products with a creamier, less irritating base. These products stimulate collagen, lighten brown spots, and are to be used in conjunction with the cleansers and moisturizers that are also available at our office, or may already be part of your daily skin care routine.

Medical facial peels are also proven to stimulate collagen production which helps tighten the skin and smooth out lines. The surface layer of old skin peels off and a new layer of skin is revealed.

Then medicated creams and miosturizers are able to penetrate the new cells more effectively. These peels are also effective for pigmentation irregularites and help to even out skin tone. These require a 3 day recovery period or longer depending on the strength of the peel.

Candela lite touch laser treatments also stimulate collagen and are effective in the treatment of rosacea and spider veins (nose veins). The Pulse Dye and Smooth Beam Lasers were scientifically proven to stimulate the production of collagen in a study conducted by Dr. Edwin Williams, the findings of his study were published in the Facial Plastic Surgery Archives magazine in 2001. These laser treatments will effect the color, texture, and tone of your skin, giving you a brighter more youthful look.

The Williams Rejuva Center’s 6-month Skin Rejuvenation program incorporates treatments that stimulate collagen, improve hyper pigmentation problems (brown spots / age spots), and erase redness or spider veins. It improves skin texture, tone, and color. This program offers two medical level (TCA) peels, four Candela light touch laser treatments, medicated creams, and a basic skin care regime to maintain your beautiful results. The Williams Rejuva Center also offers two additional programs to continue maintaining results: The Next Step, and the Smooth Beam package. The Next Step includes three 10% TCA peels, while the Smooth Beam Package includes four full face treatments with the Candela Smooth Beam Laser. These programs will help you continue improving the healthy look of your skin.
