Cheek Augmentation

 Q.  What is cheek augmentation?

A.   Cheek augmentation is a surgical procedure able to enhance the cheekbones and achieve better harmony of the facial features by inserting an implant in the cheek area.

 

Q.   How do I know if I'm a good candidate for cheek augmentation?

A.   Good candidates for cheek augmentation include physically healthy men and women who have realistic expectations and are interested in making their cheekbones appear more prominent.

 

Q.  What are the implants for cheek augmentation made of?

A.  Facial implants are made of a variety of materials. For cheek augmentation, Gore-Tex implants are often used.

 

Q.   What can I expect during a consultation for cheek augmentation?

A.  During a consultation for cheek augmentation, the surgeon will discuss your goals and all aspects of the surgery, including the anesthesia, the facility, the surgical technique, the costs and the risks. Patients can help convey their goals by bringing in photos of cheekbones that they find appealing.

 

Q.   Where does the cheek augmentation surgery take place?

A.  Cheek augmentation may be performed in a surgeon's office-based facility, an outpatient surgical center or a hospital.

 

Q.   What type of anesthesia is used for cheek augmentation?

A.   Cheek augmentation is often performed either with local anesthesia and sedation or with general anesthesia.

 

Q.  How is cheek augmentation performed?

A.  Incisions are first made inside the upper lip. A pocket is then created for the implant, the implant is inserted, and the incisions are closed.

 

Q.   How long does cheek augmentation take to perform?

A.  Cheek augmentation generally takes between thirty and forty-five minutes to perform.

 

Q.   Where are the incisions made for cheek augmentation?

A.  For cheek augmentation, the incisions are made inside of the upper lip.

 

Q.  Are there scars that result from cheek augmentation?

A.  The incisions for cheek augmentation will not result in visible scars, they are well-concealed as they're typically placed inside of the upper lip.

 

Q.   Is there much pain with cheek augmentation?

A.   Some discomfort can occur after cheek augmentation, though this can be controlled with pain medication prescribed by the doctor.

 

Q.   Will I be able to drive myself home after my cheek augmentation procedure?

A.   Patients should plan for someone to drive them home after undergoing the cheek augmentation procedure.

 

Q.   Will I need to have someone stay with me at home after undergoing cheek augmentation?

A.  Yes, patients should have someone stay with them during the first day after undergoing the procedure.

 

Q.   What can I expect of the recovery after cheek augmentation?

A.   Patients will likely have difficulty moving the mouth and lips at first and dietary restrictions may be required, especially in an intra-oral incision.  Frequent mouth washes, especially after meals will be required.

 

Q.   When will I be able to go back to work after my cheek augmentation procedure?

A.   Most cheek augmentation patients are able to return to work within one week after surgery.

 

Q.   How soon after my cheek augmentation procedure will I be able to exercise?

A.  Cheek augmentation patients will need to avoid activities that can bump or jar the face for at least six weeks.

 

Q.   How long after a cheek augmentation procedure are the stitches removed?

A.   After cheek augmentation, the stitches will dissolve on their own in about ten days.

 

Q.   What are the risks or complications that can occur with cheek augmentation?

A.   As with all types of surgery there are potential complications that may occur with cheek augmentation and these may include adverse anesthesia reactions, capsular contracture, implant shifting, infection, unnatural shape, and the need for additional surgery.

 

Q.  Are cheek augmentation procedures ever covered by insurance?

A.   Cheek augmentation procedures are typically not covered by insurance when performed solely for cosmetic purposes.

My 8-year-old son is constantly teased because of his large ears. He wants to have surgery but I feel he is too young, is still growing and may regret having surgery in the future. What can I say to him to deter him from wanting this?

Obviously, a decision to have surgery on a child's ears should be a well informed decision and something that both the parents and the child wish to proceed forward with. In our experience, children at the age of 5 or older are good candidates for the surgery. This is the age when they begin to experience some degree of teasing at school and become more aware of their body image. At the same time the ears themselves have grown to close to their final adult size and therefore the surgery can be done safely and effectively at this age.

One of my ears has always been slightly larger than the other. I now have the financial ability to undergo otoplasty to fix my issue. What is the usual recovery time for such a procedure so that I can give my job notification?

Typically the recovery after otoplasty is approximately one week. There still may be some residual tenderness and mild degree of swelling after the procedure however most patients are able to return to work after one week.
