Question: Are there any hormone related symptoms other than menopause that are frequently treated with bioidentical hormones? Answer:
There are many hormone related symptoms that are related to menopause that we do not necessarily think of other than the hot flashes and night sweats. Other symptoms of menopause include mood changes, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, hair thinning, osteopenia or osteoporosis, weight gain, libido changes, difficulty sleeping, mood swings, etc. Posted by

Question: Is incontinence a symptom of menopause? I am finding this very embarrassing and would like to know if BHRT can treat it. Answer:
Incontinence does tend to occur as estrogen declines during menopause. Estrogen can help the incontinence if it is due to the estrogen deficiency and hormonal balance tends to help these types of symptoms. However, if the incontinence is due to previous surgery or other bladder issues, the BHRT may not be the complete solution. Posted by

Question: As I have gotten older my memory has gotten so much worse and my brain so fuzzy. I was starting to get worried that I was getting Alzheimer's or dementia but I did some research and now I think it is hormonal. What sort of treatments could help with this? Answer:
Estrogen is your hormone of memory so if you are near the time of menopause or post menopausal, very likely an estrogen deficiency is contributing to memory problems especially the brain fog that many women experience. Certainly we want to improve memory. There are many nutritional things that can help with memory, particular supplements such as Phosphatidylserine and Vinpocetine, keeping mentally active by reading, doing crosswords, doing puzzles and using the brain helps as well. Question: Since I have become menopausal, I have had the worst problem with fatigue. I feel like it is ruining my relationship with my husband, affecting my work and friendships. Will bioidentical hormones help treat fatigue? Answer:
When we measure your hormone status through a saliva test, I always like to measure a 4-point cortisol level. Cortisol is also a major hormone associated with fatigue. Certainly a loss of sex hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA can cause fatigue as well and so can abnormal Cortisol so we want to look at the whole spectrum of hormones and usually it is a combination of several hormone imbalances contributing to fatigue so we want to address all potential causes of fatigue. Question: My friend said she started feeling better the day after she started her bioidentical hormones treatment. I thought this had to be in her head. Is it really possible to start feeling the effects this quickly? When do most women start to feel better after starting on BHRT? Answer:
It is unusual to feel better the day after starting the hormones. I typically tell patients it takes up to three months to feel the full benefit of the dose they are prescribed. Posted by

Question: I recently saw a product for bioidentical estrogen advertised as real human estrogen. Isn't this misleading? Aren't bioidentical hormones still created in a laboratory? Answer:
Yes, bioidentical hormones are created in a laboratory. Most are derived from either soy or yams, now primarily yams in our area is the source of bioidentical hormones. Clearly this has to be processed and purified in a laboratory before it can be compounded as a prescription. So they are not derived from humans, they are derived from a plant source and they are purified in a laboratory prior to being compounded as a hormone to ensure quality and purity of the product. Question: I was on Premarin and stopped taking it many years ago because of the concerns over heart disease, strokes, blood clots, etc. I have been on antidepressants since and I am not too happy with this either. Could bioidentical hormones be a good alternative and do they not carry the same risks as Premarin. Answer:
Yes bioidentical hormones are a good alternative and they do not carry the same risks as Premarin. The bioidentical hormones are chemically identical to the same hormones in your body. They are not like Premarin which are a synthetic form of estrogen derived from pregnant mare's urine. They have been deemed safe in multiple medical studies and if you are taking antidepressants for the symptoms of menopause, I think the bioidentical hormones would certainly be a more effective treatment for your hormone deficiencies. They do not have the associated risks of heart disease, stroke and blood clots as Premarin does. Posted by

Question: I have always had horrible allergies, both seasonal and household. Will BHRT have any effect on my allergies? Is there any chance they could get better? Answer:
The allergies are likely connected to several things that have gone awry in the body. I would first consider multiple causes, primarily gut health. It is amazing when the gut barrier breaks down the blood stream gets exposed to allergens in the gut, you can really create a lot of allergies, both to food and otherwise in the body. So by increasing gut health by first doing a nice healthy detoxification program with your anti-aging physician's assistance, there is also a wonderful book called Clean by Dr. Alejandro Junger, which describes a fantastic three week detox program, this may be sufficient to help cure your allergies. The bioidentical hormones can be helpful in just obtaining optimal health. People do feel better. I think it would depend on your other health issues whether it would stop your allergies or not because you would really have to treat the whole body and get everything in the best working order possible then the allergies usually decrease, but I do recommend: Posted by

Question: I have heard bioidentical hormones can be administered vaginally. What is the advantage to doing this and how is it done? Answer: Yes, some people will prescribe their bioidenticals to be applied vaginally solely and it is just applied topically in a cream form to the vaginal mucosa. I typically have my patients apply the bulk of the bioidentical hormones to the skin of the inner upper arms or the inner thighs and then if they have particular vaginal dryness, I will prescribe Estriol which is a weak estrogen in the body but works fantastic for vaginal dryness and have them apply that to the vaginal mucosal area.
