Lovely lips. Juvederm is a new filler recently released from Allergan, the company that produces Botox Cosmetic. It is made from hyaluronic acid and is FDA approved for cosmetic use in the nasal labial folds. It is used off-label in other areas of the face such as the tear trough, marionette lines and for lip enhancement.

Patients with mild to moderate folds respond well to treatment with Juvederm. It is soft and natural looking when used for lip enhancement or in the tear trough. Treatment in the tear trough is recommended for patients with hollowness beneath their eyes. Juvederm is available in two thicknesses. Juvederm Ultra is used for fine lines, lip enhancement and tear trough correction. Juvederm Ultra Plus is more appropriate for deeper lines and folds.

Juvederm is made from hyaluronic acid, a compound found naturally in the human body. It works by plumping the area to be treated with a smooth colorless gel containing the hyaluronic molecules, and secondly by drawing water molecules into the area resulting in sustained pluming of the treated area.

Since hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body, pre-testing is not needed. Results are immediately evident with Juvederm and improve after one to two weeks. The amount of Juvederm needed to correct or enhance an area will be determined during a consultation with the Cosmetic Nurse Specialist at the Williams Rejuva Center. Usual amounts needed are dependent on the area to be treated and the amount of correction required. recent result from FDA test state results from Juvederm treatment can last for up to one year. This differs with the patient and area treated.

Side effects with Juvederm are minimal and can include discomfort during the injection, swelling, bruising, or tenderness at the injection site. These side effects, if they occur usually subside within three to seven days. Local anesthesia or numbing cream applied to the area to be treated reduces discomfort.
