Perlane

In 2008 the FDA approved a  wrinkle filler called Perlane for the treatment of moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles such as the lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth (nasolabial folds). Perlane is made by Medicis, which also makes the wrinkle filler Restylane. Both products contain hyaluronic acid. Since hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the body, no allergy testing is required.

The primary difference between Restylane and Perlane is that the hyaluronic acid gel particles in Perlane are larger than those found in Restylane. Perlanes larger gel particles can reach the deep layers of the skin offering enhanced volume and lifting power. The plumping of the skin is noticed immediately by binding water molecules which helps to maintain volume. Perlane is a clear gel that is non-animal based.

Perlane is injected into the skin with an ultra fine needle by a Cosmetic Nurse Specialist at the Williams Rejuva Center. Before being treated, avoid using St. Johns Wort, high doses of vitamin E supplements, as well as aspirin and other non steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines like Advil. These may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site. The effects of Perlane generally last for about six months. The side effects are minimal and can include slight discomfort at the time of the injection. After your treatment, you might have some swelling, redness, tenderness at the injection site and bruising. This will normally last three to seven days.

Obviously, a decision to have surgery on a child's ears should be a well informed decision and something that both the parents and the child wish to proceed forward with. In our experience, children at the age of 5 or older are good candidates for the surgery. This is the age when they begin to experience some degree of teasing at school and become more aware of their body image. At the same time the ears themselves have grown to close to their final adult size and therefore the surgery can be done safely and effectively at this age.

One of my ears has always been slightly larger than the other. I now have the financial ability to undergo otoplasty to fix my issue. What is the usual recovery time for such a procedure so that I can give my job notification?

Typically the recovery after otoplasty is approximately one week. There still may be some residual tenderness and mild degree of swelling after the procedure however most patients are able to return to work after one week.
