My 8-year-old son is constantly teased because of his large ears. He wants to have surgery but I feel he is too young, is still growing and may regret having surgery in the future. What can I say to him to deter him from wanting this?

Tretinoin (Retin-A)
Dr. Edwin Williams is a board certified facial plastic surgeon that has formulated a series of prescription strength creams in a creamier nonirritating base that contain active ingredients which have been scientifically proven to reverse sun damage and stimulate collagen production. He feels that patients should use creams of prescription strength to be most effective. These creams should be the foundation of your skin care regiment. Dr. Williams formulated Tretinoin (Retin-A) as the second step in his skin care regiment. Tretinoin is the active ingredient found in Retin-A. Tretinoin was developed more than 25 years ago as an acne treatment. Nearly 10 years ago, it was promoted as an anti-aging product effective in treating wrinkles due to the stimulation of collagen growth. Collagen is a natural protein that provides structural support. It is found throughout the body - in skin, muscle, tendon and the bone. Fibers of collagen are woven together like threads in fabric to form a framework into which new cells can grow. In the skin, collagen provides texture, resiliency, and shape. Tretinoin (Retin A) can be drying, in the colder winter weather you may want to decrease the frequency of usage. Tretinoin comes in two strengths, if you are on the higher strength you may want to consider using the lower strength if you find the change in season is causing skin irritation. You can also use a moisturizer over the Tretinoin, but you need to wait at least 10 minutes for the Tretinoin to be absorbed into the skin, before application of the moisturizer. *Please be aware that if you become pregnant or are breast feeding you must discontinue use of this product.* How to apply your Tretinoin: *Use at night only*
When starting Tretinoin begin by applying 2 times a week. Increase use to every other night and finally every night. Remember - The goal is to use Retin A as frequently as tolerated by YOUR skin. It may take a while for your skin to tolerate it every night, just be patient. If your skin becomes irritated, back off the product till symptoms subside, and use less frequently, again working up to toleration of the product every night. * Using a sun block of SPF 30 or higher daily is important due to the fact that Tretinoin (Retin A) use can cause increased sun sensitivity. To find out if you are a good candidate for this product contact the Williams Rejuva Center at (518) 786-7004 to set up an appointment for a cream consultation. Obviously, a decision to have surgery on a child's ears should be a well informed decision and something that both the parents and the child wish to proceed forward with. In our experience, children at the age of 5 or older are good candidates for the surgery. This is the age when they begin to experience some degree of teasing at school and become more aware of their body image. At the same time the ears themselves have grown to close to their final adult size and therefore the surgery can be done safely and effectively at this age.
One of my ears has always been slightly larger than the other. I now have the financial ability to undergo otoplasty to fix my issue. What is the usual recovery time for such a procedure so that I can give my job notification?
Typically the recovery after otoplasty is approximately one week. There still may be some residual tenderness and mild degree of swelling after the procedure however most patients are able to return to work after one week.
