 Chin Augmentation

Q.   What is chin augmentation?
A.   Chin augmentation, also known as chin enhancement, is a minimally-invasive cosmetic surgery procedure able to provide a better balance to the facial features by building up a receding or small chin with the use of a facial implant.

Q.   How do I know if I'm a good candidate for chin augmentation?
A.  Good candidates for chin augmentation include men and women who are physically healthy, realistic in their expectations, and looking to enhance or improve the appearance of the chin.

Q.   What are the implants that are used for chin augmentation made of?
A.   Facial implants come in a variety of materials, shapes and sizes. For chin augmentation, implants made of Gore-Tex are used.

Q.   What can I expect during consultation for chin augmentation?A.   During a consultation for chin augmentation, the surgeon will discuss your goals and all aspects of the surgery, including the facility, the anesthesia, the surgical technique, the costs and the risks. We will use a computerized photo imager to give you a better idea of the possible outcome. It can also help to bring in photos that show chins that you find appealing.

Q.   Where is chin augmentation performed?
A.   Chin augmentation may be performed in an outpatient surgery center, a surgeon's office-based facility, or a hospital.

Q.   What type of anesthesia is used during chin augmentation surgery?
A.   Chin augmentation is often performed with local anesthesia and sedation, though some cases may be performed with general anesthesia.

Q.   How is the actual chin augmentation procedure performed?
A.   The implant is first selected so that the size and shape best fit the patient. A small incision is then made on the skin just beneath the chin. Once the incision is made, the implant will be inserted over the front of the jawbone and the incision will be closed.

Q.   What is the surgery time for chin augmentation?A.   Surgical times will vary, though chin augmentation can typically be performed in thirty minutes to an hour.

Q.   Where are the incisions made for chin augmentation?
A.   For chin augmentation, a small incision is made on the skin just beneath the chin.

Q.  Will chin augmentation leave scars?
A.  The incisions made for chin augmentation will leave scars, though they tend to be well-concealed on the skin just beneath the chin.

Q.   Is there much pain with chin augmentation?
A.   Chin augmentation patients may experience some discomfort. If necessary, pain medication can be prescribed.

Q.   Will I be able to drive myself home after my chin augmentation procedure?A.   Patients should arrange to have someone drive them home after their procedure.

Q.   After my chin augmentation procedure, will someone need to stay with me at home?
A.   Yes, after any surgery a responsible adult should stay with you during the first day or two.

Q.   What can I expect the recovery to be like after chin augmentation?A.   After chin augmentation, swelling and bruising is common. Patients may experience some discomfort and difficulty with talking and smiling. Restrictions may be placed on your diet.

Q.   Will I need to take much time off from work after my chin augmentation procedure?
A.   Most patients are able to return to work within one week after the chin augmentation procedure.

Q.   How soon after chin augmentation can I exercise?
A.   Any activity that can bump or jar the face should be postponed for at least six weeks after the chin augmentation procedure.

Q.  How long after the chin augmentation procedure are the stitches removed?
A.   The stitches are typically removed or dissolve on their own in about five to seven days after the chin augmentation procedure.

Q.  Are there any risks or complications with chin augmentation?A.   All types of surgery carry risks. For chin augmentation, the potential complications may include adverse anesthesia reactions, capsular contracture, implant shifting, infection, unnatural shape, and the need for additional surgery.

Q.   Does insurance ever cover the cost of chin augmentation?A.   Chin augmentation procedures performed for cosmetic purposes are usually not covered by insurance.

My 8-year-old son is constantly teased because of his large ears. He wants to have surgery but I feel he is too young, is still growing and may regret having surgery in the future. What can I say to him to deter him from wanting this?

Obviously, a decision to have surgery on a child's ears should be a well informed decision and something that both the parents and the child wish to proceed forward with. In our experience, children at the age of 5 or older are good candidates for the surgery. This is the age when they begin to experience some degree of teasing at school and become more aware of their body image. At the same time the ears themselves have grown to close to their final adult size and therefore the surgery can be done safely and effectively at this age.

One of my ears has always been slightly larger than the other. I now have the financial ability to undergo otoplasty to fix my issue. What is the usual recovery time for such a procedure so that I can give my job notification?

Typically the recovery after otoplasty is approximately one week. There still may be some residual tenderness and mild degree of swelling after the procedure however most patients are able to return to work after one week.
