Q. What is Juvederm?
A.
Juvederm is a new filler recently released from Allergan. It is made from hyaluronic acid and is FDA approved for cosmetic use. Juvederm can be use in the nasal labial folds, the marionette lines, for lip enhancement, and in the tear trough. Juvederm injectable gel is"next generation" Hyaluronic acid, smooth consistency gel dermal filler that helps to restore your skins volume and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds. Juvederm comes in two formulations - Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus.

Q. Why does Juvederm come in two formulations?
A.
Juvederm injectable gel is available in two formulations to allow us to tailor treatment to your unique needs. Juvederm Ultra provides versatility in contouring and volumizing facial wrinkles and folds. Juvederm Ultra Plus is a more robust formulation for volumizing and correcting deeper folds and wrinkles.

Q. Who is a good candidate for Juvaderm?
A
. Good candidates for Juvederm include physically healthy men and women who are looking to improve their appearance. It's important that patients have realistic expectations. Juvederm may not be appropriate for women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant soon. Patients should avoid taking Aspirin, Motrin, Non- Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Medications, St. John's Wort or high doses of Vitamin E Supplements for two weeks prior to a Juvederm treatment. This will help to minimize any bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Patients with mild to moderate lines and folds respond well to Juvederm treatment. It is soft and natural looking when used as a lip enhancement or in the tear trough. Treatment in the tear trough is recommended for patients with hollowness beneath the eyes.

Q. How does Juvederm work?
A.
Juvederm is made from hyaluronic acid similar to the material found in the joints. It works by plumping the area with a smooth gel containing the hyaluronic acid molecules, and secondly by drawing water molecules to the area resulting in sustained plumping of the treated area.

Q. Do I need a skin test before being treated with Juvederm?
A.
No, a skin test is not required before treatment with Juvederm. Juvaderm contains hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in the body.

Q. Are the results from Juvederm immediate?
A.
Yes, the results are immediate after treatment with Juvederm. The appearance will continue to improve for up to two weeks after the initial treatment.

Q. How many treatments of Juvederm are required?
A.
Together with the Cosmetic Nurse Specialist, you will discuss the areas to be treated and the amount of Juvaderm required. The results are immediate and will last about six to nine months, at which time a touch-up may be required.

Q. How long do the Juvederm treatment results last?
A.
Treatment results will differ between patients. The unique formulation of Juvederm provides results that last up to 6 months or longer. The length of time the effect of a Juvederm treatment lasts is very individual and depends on many factors, such as the structure of your skin, lifestyle and age. Experience indicates that touch - up and follow - up treatments will add to the duration

Q. What are the possible side effects of treatment with Juvederm?
A.
Treatment with Juvederm can result in side effects such as bruising, swelling or tenderness at the site of injection. These side effects, if they occur will subside within 3 to 7 days. As with any procedure that involves an injection through the skin, there is always the chance of infection. Other possible side effects are extremely rare.

Q. Is the treatment painful?
A.
The Williams Rejuva Center Cosmetic Nurse Specialists pride themselves in providing Juvederm treatments with minimal or no discomfort. We have researched methods for optimum results with nearly pain free injections. Discomfort is minimal because we use anesthetic agents such as topical creams and or local anesthetic. The needle used to inject the Juvedermis very fine to further minimize discomfort.

Q. Where are the injections performed?
A.
The Juvederm treatments are performed in The Williams Rejuva Centers. The Rejuva Centersprovide arelaxing spa-like environmentfor our Cosmetic Nurse Specialists to treat you in.

Q. What happens during a consultation for Juvederm?
A.
You will meet with a Nurse Practitioner and a Cosmetic Nurse Specialist to discuss goals and evaluate your face. All aspects of the treatment including cost and risks will be discussed.

Q. Is Juvederm Safe?
A. Yes. In fact, Juvederm injectable gel is the first FDA- approved Hyaluronic acid dermal filler that has proven its safety and effectiveness in persons of color. Studies with Juvederm showed no increased risk of hyper pigmentation or hypertrophy scarring in patients of color.

Q. Who should administer Juvederm?
A. Any authorized health care professional can administer Juvederm, but Dr. Edwin Williams, a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon in Albany, NY, recommends those seeking to receive a Juvederm treatment should be treated by a health care professional with experience. Cosmetic Physicians and cosmetic nurse specialists are generally more experienced professionals. The Williams Rejuva Center performs a high volume of Juvederm treatments daily. We are a National Teaching Center for both Restylane and Botox� Cosmetic.

Q. Where can Juvederm be injected?
A. For treatment of wrinkles or folds, Juvederm is injected by our Cosmetic Nurse Specialist into the skin in small amounts with a very fine needle. The injected gel gives natural volume under the wrinkle, which is lifted up and smoothed out. The results can be seen immediately.

Glabella Lines - lines between the eyebrows

Periorbital Lines - lines that form on the outskirts of the eye area

Worry Lines - lines across the forehead

Nasolabial Folds - lines from the nose to the outer corners of the mouth

Oral Commisures - lines from the corner of the mouth

Perioral Lines - Lines that form on the upper lip area

Smile Lines - lines that form from on the outer corners of the mouth to the cheek.

For creating a more pronounced Mouth and fuller Lips our Cosmetic Nurse Specialist injects Juvederm into the upper and/or lower Lips. This creates a fuller more sensual mouth.

Q.How long do Juvederm treatments take?
A. To administer a Juvederm treatment it will take approximately 20 minutes per area to treat. The result is instantaneous, producing a long lasting, natural enhancement.

Q. Will my lines and folds look worse if I choose not to continue with Juvederm treatments?
A. No, should you decide not to continue with Juvederm treatments, the areas treated will gradually revert back to their pre- Juvederm appearance.

Q. How much Juvederm should be injected?
A. The health care professional you have treat you, with experience will be able to determine the optimum dose and injection site to provide an excellent result. Our Cosmetic Nurse Specialists discuss the desired outcome with each patient and individualize each Juvederm treatment accordingly.

Q. What should I tell my doctor before having a Juvederm treatment?
A. Notify your Doctor or Cosmetic Nurse Specialist if you are taking Aspirin, Aspirin like medications ( Bextra, Celebrex, Advil, Naproxen) Vitamin E, Herbal Supplements or Alcohol consumption. It may be recommended that you stop taking any of these at least two weeks before your Juvederm treatment.

Q. What is recovery like after a Juvederm treatment?
A. After your Juvederm treatment, any discomfort that patients experience typically fades within a few days. When the lips are treated with Juvederm, they may appear swollen and somewhat uneven during the first few days. Normal activities can usually be resumed right away, though the treated area should not be exposed to intense heat or extreme cold until the redness or swelling has resolved. Alcohol consumption and exercise should be avoided for at least six hours after your Juvederm treatment.

Q. Will I need to take off from work after my Juvederm treatment?
A. Most patients can resume normal activities after their Juvederm treatment. Since swelling of the lips is possible, you may choose to stay home for the first day of your Juvederm treatment.

Q. Does Juvederm have any limitations?
A. The limitations and realistic expectations of your Juvederm treatment will be discussed with the professional administering Juvederm at The Williams Rejuva Center. We want each patient to understand the cosmetic facial treatment and what to expect from Juvederm.

Q. Does insurance ever cover the cost of Juvederm?
A.
Juvederm treatments are considered cosmetic and therefore are not covered by insurance.

Q. Is it possible to get financing for this procedure?
A.
Yes, financing is available for many of our procedures and this option can be discussed during your consultation.

Q. Does Juvederm work for people of all skin tones?
A.
Yes. People of all skin tones can receive treatment with Juvederm

My 8-year-old son is constantly teased because of his large ears. He wants to have surgery but I feel he is too young, is still growing and may regret having surgery in the future. What can I say to him to deter him from wanting this?

Obviously, a decision to have surgery on a child's ears should be a well informed decision and something that both the parents and the child wish to proceed forward with. In our experience, children at the age of 5 or older are good candidates for the surgery. This is the age when they begin to experience some degree of teasing at school and become more aware of their body image. At the same time the ears themselves have grown to close to their final adult size and therefore the surgery can be done safely and effectively at this age.

One of my ears has always been slightly larger than the other. I now have the financial ability to undergo otoplasty to fix my issue. What is the usual recovery time for such a procedure so that I can give my job notification?

Typically the recovery after otoplasty is approximately one week. There still may be some residual tenderness and mild degree of swelling after the procedure however most patients are able to return to work after one week.
