I am 74 years old, male and I have had surgery on my face for skin cancer.

Question:

I am 74 years old, male and I have had surgery on my face for skin cancer. There is a piece out of my nose. Would a nose job be necessary to fill the gouge or is this a different type of procedure?

Answer:

In your particular situation it does depend on whether the hole in your nose is large or small and whether the hole is partial or full thickness through the nose. When there is a full thickness defect there is essentially a three-layer type repair that first addresses the inner lining of the nose followed by rebuilding the cartilage framework of the nose and lastly rebuilding the soft tissue cover over the nose. By using this three-layered repair the best functional and cosmetic result is achievable. We would not necessarily refer to this as a Rhinoplasty or nose-job but more of a reconstructive effort. The nose does happen to be a fairly common area for skin cancer involvement since it is exposed to the sun when one is outside unless they wear a wide-brimmed hat. Posted by Dr. Williams
