I am allergic to latex and some antibiotics.

Question:

I am allergic to latex and some antibiotics. I have scheduled rhinoplasty for next week to remove the bump on my nose. Is there is anything that is put into the nose during the surgery, or kept in or on the nose afterwards that I could be allergic to?

Answer:

It is not uncommon for patients to have an allergy to latex and antibiotics. There is a system in place now in all hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers using a protocol for patients’ with latex allergies. Essentially everything from the IV tubing to gloves are latex-free and this keeps the patients’ safe from worry or concern for any type of allergic reaction. After Rhinoplasty many surgeons do apply packing in the nostril. We do not pack the nose; however, we do put a light tampon-type compression in each nostril that stays for 24 hours. We typically impregnate this with an antibiotic ointment but Aquaphor can be used as well when the patient is allergic. Again, this is standard protocol for all hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers and all patients are asked about any allergy history and patients should inform their provider of any possible allergy’.
