Botox Cosmetic | Albany & Saratoga, NY

You laugh, You frown, You concentrate
And over time, those facial expressions leave their mark upon your face. Until recently there wasn’t really a lot you could do about it. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a simple non-surgical cosmetic procedure that can dramatically reduce even your toughest wrinkles within days.

Botox Cosmetic Before and After Gallery, Latham and New York, NYBOTOX® Cosmetic may be used to treat furrows between the brows, forehead wrinkles, smiles lines or “crow’s feet”, fine wrinkles around the lips, wrinkling and dimpling of the chin, platysmal banding in the neck, and marionette lines. Botox has also proven effective in the treatment of migraines and hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating). For most people, facial wrinkles are caused by everyday muscle activity. As we age our skin loses its elasticity (tightness) and the collagen under our skin thins, causing lines or wrinkles where the skin creases. For many, BOTOX® Cosmetic virtually ‘erases’ lines caused by muscle overactivity. Unlike surgery, BOTOX® Cosmetic is fast, simple, and minimally invasive, with no downtime or recovery. Within days, patients report looking more natural and relaxed.

Good candidates for Botox include physically healthy men and women who are looking to improve the appearance of facial wrinkles. It’s important that patients have realistic expectations because Botox may not be able to completely eliminate all lines present, particularly in patients with very deep furrows. Botox may not be appropriate for women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant soon.

Botox Cosmetic | Latham and New York, NYBOTOX® Cosmetic is a natural, purified protein produced by the Clostridium Botulinum Bacterium, which works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the treated muscles. BOTOX® Cosmetic directly decreases muscle activity which causes facial lines and wrinkles. It may soften, but not eliminate lines that are present “at rest” or when the muscles are not contracting. Over time, if treatment is continued, muscles will atrophy (decrease in mass) and these areas have been shown to re-morph or change appearance of the muscle, eliminating the lines present at rest. The effects of Botox® Cosmetic are confined to the treated muscle. Botox® Cosmetic does not travel throughout the body.

BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are simple procedures that take place in a medical office such as the Williams Rejuva Center. They are administered as a very low dose with a few tiny injections directly into the specific facial muscles responsible for wrinkles and lines. This is a simple procedure that takes about ten minutes per area treated. Due to the minimal discomfort involved, no anesthesia is required, although ice is used to briefly numb the injection site.

Patients can typically return to work and other normal activities immediately after treatment, although some localized numbness, a burning sensation, bruising or swelling may occur at the injection site and a very small percentage of patients may experience no improvement with treatment (such as Iraq veterans who have received immunizations for Botulinum prior to serving overseas). Improvement in the treated area can be seen within three to seven days after treatment. The results of Botox can last up to four months, with the majority of patients returning every three months for continuing treatment sessions.

Allergan, the company that produces BOTOX® Cosmetic and Prevage MD, performed a study asking thousands of users how it feels to have a treatment. Most patients that received a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment compare the treatment to a bug bite, similar to the feeling of a mosquito bite. We pride ourselves in providing BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments with minimal or no discomfort. We have researched methods for optimum results with nearly pain free injections.

Prior to the FDA’s approval of BOTOX® Cosmetic, BOTOX® had been used for several different medical conditions including muscle contractions caused by cerebral palsy, incontinence caused by bladder spasms, and migraine headaches caused by forehead tension. Currently, the FDA has only approved one cosmetic application for BOTOX® Cosmetic (the treatment of furrows in the glabella region). Dr. Williams believes BOTOX® Cosmetic is a safe non-surgical cosmetic treatment that provides his patients with a natural, more youthful appearance. The Williams Rejuva Center’s Cosmetic Nurse Specialists are able to treat many other areas of your face with BOTOX® Cosmetic. The Williams Rejuva Center staff believe in educating and informing our patients about the other areas BOTOX® Cosmetic can treat wrinkles that have not yet been FDA approved.

Any authorized health care professional can administer BOTOX® Cosmetic, but Dr. Edwin F. Williams, recommends those seeking to receive a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment be treated by a health care professional with experience. Cosmetic Physicians and Cosmetic Nurse Specialists are generally more experienced professionals. Dr. Edwin F. Williams has more then 15 years of experience with BOTOX® Cosmetic. Our Cosmetic Nurse Specialists are highly trained Nurse Practitioners and Registered Nurses practicing under the direction of Dr. Edwin F. Williams. The Williams Rejuva Center performs a high volume of BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments daily. We are a National Teaching Center for both surgical and non-surgical procedures including BOTOX® Cosmetic and Juvederm (a facial soft tissue filler).

Appropriate doses of BOTOX® Cosmetic will vary depending upon the area being treated and how active your facial muscles are. The Cosmetic Nurse Practitioner Specialist which consults with you will help to determine your treatment plan, with their experience they will be able to determine the optimum dose and injection sites to provide an excellent result. We discuss the desired outcome with each patient and individualize the treatment accordingly. Some patients want absolutely no movement, while others prefer a more natural result, this natural result can be achieved using Dr Williams’ BOTOX® Cosmetic Concept. We provide the patient with the minimum dose to achieve the desired result. Our philosophy is to maintain the muscle control over time to eventually decrease the dose necessary for optimum results.

Only your doctor can decide if BOTOX® Cosmetic is right for you. Notify us if you are taking any vitamin E, aspirin, aspirin like medications, (Celebrex, Advil, Naproxen) herbal supplements or alcohol consumption. Your doctor may recommend stopping any of those at least 2 weeks prior to a treatment to reduce the risk of bruising. Before starting treatment, tell your doctor if you have any diseases that affect your nerves and muscles. These diseases may increase your chance of side effects with BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or are planning to become pregnant soon we recommend postponing any BOTOX ® Cosmetic treatments. You should also share with your doctor if you have ever had any surgery ie: Cosmetic or procedures medically necessary, in the areas you are having any cosmetic treatment. These limitations and realistic expectations will be discussed with the professional administering the BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment at The Williams Rejuva Center . We want each patient to understand the cosmetic facial treatment and what to expect from BOTOX® Cosmetic.

BOTOX®Cosmetic – Brow Lift

As we age, the brow area becomes heavy causing a tired aging appearance. Dr. Edwin F. Williams, a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon in Latham NY, and The Williams Rejuva Center’s Cosmetic Nurse Specialists are able to ‘lift’ the eyebrows with a BOTOX®Cosmetic treatment.

BOTOX®Cosmetic relaxes the obicularis oculi muscles allowing the frontalis muscle (located in forehead) to lift the brow area. This provides the patient with a more youthful, rested appearance. Unlike facial plastic surgery, BOTOX®Cosmetic is fast, simple, and minimally invasive, with no downtime or recovery. Within days, patients report looking more natural with a more youthful overall appearance.

BOTOX® Cosmetic – Bunny Lines

BOTOX® Cosmetic can relax over active facial muscles on the sides of the nose. These muscles can cause horizontal wrinkles across the top of your nose. At the Williams Rejuva Center we call them ‘Bunny Lines’. You can cause these facial wrinkles by lifting up or ‘scrunching’ your nose. They can be softened or eliminated through the use of BOTOX® Cosmetic.

BOTOX® Cosmetic – Corners of Your Mouth

Dr. Edwin Williams has several patients who have BOTOX® Cosmetic to treat the depressor angluli oris muscle. This muscle that pulls the corners of the mouth down, giving the patient a constant frowning appearance and increasing the appearance of marionette lines. These are the lines evident from the corners of the mouth to the chin area.

When the depressor angluli oris is treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic, it relaxes the muscle, allowing the levitor angluli oris muscle to raise the corners of the mouth, giving the patient a more pleasant appearance. This treatment, in combination with a soft tissue filler such as Radiesse or Juvederm, is very effective in eliminating the marionette lines.

BOTOX® Cosmetic – Fine Wrinkles Around the Lips

Fine lines and wrinkles around your lips can be caused by smoking, puckering, sun damage, and genetics. These lines can be relaxed and softened with BOTOX® Cosmetic.

For deeper wrinkles and lines in this area Dr. Edwin F. Williams recommends a combination of BOTOX® Cosmetic and a soft tissue filler treatment like Juvederm. After treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic muscles around the mouth are relaxed and no longer forming lip lines. With the addition of a soft tissue filler any residual lines are filled in and softened giving the youthful appearance our patients desire.

BOTOX® Cosmetic – Forehead Wrinkles

BOTOX® Cosmetic | Latham and New York, NYBOTOX® Cosmetic can be used to relax the horizontal facial wrinkles across your forehead that are caused by raising the frontalis muscle that lies between the eyebrows and the hair line.

BOTOX® Cosmetic limits the amount of activity in your forehead, naturally smoothing out wrinkles. The necessary dose and injection sites need to be evaluated to obtain an optimum result. Once these muscles are controlled with the use of BOTOX® Cosmetic, facial lines may be eliminated especially if the treatment is maintained over a period of time.

Currently, the FDA has only approved one cosmetic application for BOTOX® Cosmetic (the treatment of furrows in the glabella region). BOTOX® Cosmetic – Furrows

BOTOX® Cosmetic | Latham and New York, NYBOTOX®Cosmetic virtually erases the furrows that form in the glabella region. The Glabella is the region of the forehead directly between the eyebrows and above the bridge of the nose. There are three sets of muscles in the glabella region that cause the appearance of an “11” or an upside down “Y” to form. These are the corrugator muscles, the procerus muscles and the obicularis oculi muscles. These muscles work together to pull eyebrows together when frowning or squinting, and are responsible for the vertical furrows in the area between the eyebrows. To adequately cosmetically treat this facial area, all three sets of muscles need to be treated. In many individuals these muscles are very strong and the dose and sites for injection must be evaluated by someone with experience and knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of this area.

Dr. Edwin Williams, a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon in Latham NY, and his staff of Cosmetic Nurse Specialists in the Williams Rejuva Center have the experience and training necessary to provide patients with excellent results in a safe, serene environment. When deep facial furrows develop from years of over active muscle contractions in this area, the furrows are evident while at rest. When this occurs, an additional cosmetic treatment with a soft tissue filler such as Juvederm may be needed to soften facial lines or furrows at rest.

BOTOX® Cosmetic – Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis | Latham and New York, NY Hyperhidrosis is the medical term given to the condition referred to as excessive sweating. One out of every one hundred people suffers from this condition which is caused by hyperactivity of the nervous system controlling sweat production. This causes an over production of sweat that can reach volumes measured in liters per hour. The condition can affect the sweat glands of the hands and feet as well as the axilla (armpit). Those who suffers from this condition have to deal with embarrassment and ruined clothing or shoes. Some individuals have to change clothing every hour or wear liners under their arms.

There have been several options for treatment of this condition. The first step is a medically prescribed antiperspirant containing a powerful chemical called aluminum chloride. This chemical prevents the sweat from escaping the pores. Many times this treatment is not effective. Primary hyperhidrosis means the cause is not related to another condition such as obesity, menopause, drug use, endocrine disorders (hypoglycemia, hyperthyroidism, pheochromocytoma) or neurological conditions involving autonomic dysregulation. Oral medications tried for this condition have not been successful. There are surgical options for treatment of this condition, but they have some drawbacks as well, including increased sweat production in other areas.

Recently the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved the use of BOTOX® Cosmetic as a treatment for hyperhidrosis because BOTOX® Cosmetic prevents the release of acetylcholine. If acetylcholine is not released the sweat gland will not be stimulated to produce sweat. This treatment has been proven to effectively decrease the production of sweat by 95% within the first forty-eight hours and will reach a peak within two weeks. The effects last an average of six to nine months and some patients require only one treatment. During the hyperhidrosis treatment, the area to be treated is identified and then injected with BOTOX® Cosmetic through a small needle. If needed, a topical anesthetic can be used, but usually there is minimal discomfort involved. There has been no evidence of compensatory sweating in other areas following the use of BOTOX® Cosmetic. If the sweating returns after treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic, patients report that the sweating decreased in severity. The use of BOTOX® Cosmetic in these patients greatly improves their quality of life and confidence both socially and in their careers.

BOTOX® Cosmetic – Lip Eversion

BOTOX®Cosmetic - Lip Eversion | Latham and New York, NYA small amount of Botox® Cosmetic is placed in the Vermillion Border which pulls the top lip upwards making it look fuller. At the same time, it creates the appearance of a fuller lower lip due to the upper lip being slightly elevated off of the lower lip.

This is an alternate method to enhance the lips and can be used alone or in conjunction with a filler such as Juvederm.

This treatment takes about 10 to 15 minutes and patients will need to return for a session every 4 weeks to maintain their result.

Dr Williams’ BOTOX® Cosmetic Concept

In the Williams Rejuva Center we follow Dr. Williams’ BOTOX® Cosmetic Concept. Dr. Williams believes the most natural approach to administering Botox Cosmetic is to have the smallest, yet most effective, amount of Botox possible to gently relax the muscles that cause wrinkles, without freezing your face. Overdone Botox can leave your face looking a bit frozen. A natural result is what we seek to accomplish.

First, an evaluation of the strength of your muscles is performed. This will determine how much Botox will be needed to achieve the desired result. Our fees are not based on the area, but the amount of Botox required. This decreases your cost dramatically.

Next, you are scheduled to return for a two week follow up where your results will be evaluated. At this time, if needed, we may suggest additional Botox units to further relax the active muscle. Of course, you will only pay for the additional amount of Botox used at this time.

With each treatment, the activity in the treated area becomes less as the muscle weakens. Therefore, less Botox will be needed for future treatments. Since we charge by the amount, not the area being treated, enabling our patients pay less.

BOTOX® Cosmetic – Platysmal Banding

As we age, the skin on our neck area loses elasticity which can cause the muscles running from under the chin down the neck to become very visible. This is called platysmal banding and is caused when the vertical muscles located in your neck are over active. This becomes increasingly prominent with continuing loss of elasticity in the neck. BOTOX® Cosmetic will soften or eliminate these lines.

BOTOX® Cosmetic – Wrinkles Across the Chin

Some patients develop a deep facial line or horizontal fold between the lower lip and the chin called the mental crease. This is caused by over activity in the mentalis muscle. Over activity in the mentalis muscle can also cause dimpling in the chin called “peau de orange” because it resembles an orange peel.

Dr. Edwin F. Williams a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon, and The Williams Rejuva Center Cosmetic Nurse Specialists can treat this area by using a very small amount of BOTOX® Cosmetic. The BOTOX®Cosmetic relaxes the mentalis muscle softening the mental crease and eliminating dimpling of the chin. If the line formed has become to deep for Botox alone to soften and eliminate it, Dr. Williams recommends the addition of a soft tissue filler.

BOTOX® Cosmetic – Smile Lines (Crows Feet)

BOTOX® Cosmetic - Smile Lines | Latham and New York, NYBOTOX® Cosmetic can be used to relax the wrinkles around the outside corners of your eyes. These facial wrinkles are called crows feet or smile lines because they are usually caused by smiling and squinting, and often have an appearance comparable to the structure of birds foot.

An evaluation of this area by a Cosmetic Nurse Specialist at the Williams Rejuva Center will determine the dose and appropriate injection sites that will provide an optimum treatment, virtually erasing lines caused by muscle activity. Relaxing these muscles results in smoothing and softening of this area, providing a more youthful appearance.

BOTOX® Cosmetic – Dimpling of the Chin

Occasionally, patients receive BOTOX® Cosmetic to treat what we call an orange peel (Pough D Orange) appearance or excessive dimpling of the muscles in the chin. Most times this appearance is only noticeable when patients force this motion. Patients with an overactive mentalis muscle, have this dimpling effect with normal conversation. After receiving BOTOX® Cosmetic, this effect can be reduced or even eliminated.
