The Williams Center Plastic Surgery Specialists, located near Albany, NY, are skilled in their practice and greatly committed to their patients. Numerous services, both surgical and non-surgical, are offered by their specialized staff of MDs, NPs and RNs. One of the newest and most popular skin care treatments is performed using the advanced elos Plus skin rejuvenation system. This facial treatment is performed with precision and care for the patient and delivers results of beautifully balanced, healthy looking skin.
Healthy skin has specific characteristics. It has an even color tone. There are no brown, hyperpigmented sun spots, no red blotches or distended capillaries. It has a firm, plump density that snugly contours the bone structure. It is not saggy, loose or deflated. And it has a smooth texture that beautifully reflects light and gives a radiant glow. When we look at a baby or young child’s skin it has all of the qualities of being healthy and balanced. Unfortunately, as we go through life and increase in age, our skin loses its healthy characteristics as a result of environmental stressors and chronological aging. Part of a comprehensive anti-aging lifestyle includes taking care of your body’s largest organ, the skin. Regular skin care treatments can proactively maintain the healthy characteristics of the skin, and even help to heal and reverse some of the characteristics associated with old, stressed, unhealthy skin.
The elos Plus skin rejuvenating system offers 3 different applicators that address the most prominent characteristics of the skin. The IPL/RF applicator addresses color correction. Intense Pulsed Light with Radio Frequency will minimize brown and red spots to even the tone of the skin. It will treat age spots, freckles, spider veins, rosacea and inflammation. The Sublime applicator addresses skin laxity and density. Sublime uses Radio Frequency with Infrared light to stimulate collagen production deep in the dermis. This will lift and tighten the jowls, under the chin and neck. The 3rd applicator is the Sublative. Sublative uses Radio Frequency to resurface and smooth the texture of the skin. It minimizes fine lines, enlarged pores and improves acne scarring. These applicators can be used individually or in any combination to customize a skin care treatment that addresses an individual’s unique skin condition. Overall skin quality and condition will improve with one treatment, but will continue to improve with a series of treatments, regular maintenance and a high quality, comprehensive daily skin care regimen.
The elos technology is superior to other systems because of the synchronization of Radio Frequency with Intense Pulsed Light and Infrared light. Elos uses RF to drive these other energies deeper into the skin. This allows for more effective treatments with fewer side effects. The elos IPL/RF applicator can be used safely on most skin types, excluding the darkest skin types (Fitzpatrick IV, V, and VI). Sublime and Sublative applicators are color blind and can safely be used on all skin types.
Steps to take prior to treatment
Many steps should be taken prior to the elos plus skin rejuvenation treatment(s) being administered. It is important to notify your doctor and the medical staff of any medical conditions that could be important or influence the treatment. This can include allergies, diagnosed medical conditions, medications you are currently taking or recently stopped taking, vitamins or supplements you are taking, recent history of similar treatments, pregnancies, history of fever blisters, dental implants or any other significant medical history should be discussed. There should be no exposure to the sun or tanning bed for 2 weeks prior to treatment. The skin should also not be treated with sunless tanner, or have any natural tan. Any products that can irritate the skin should not be used prior to the treatment. It is best to ask your doctor if any products from your topical skin regimen should be stopped prior to treatment. Specific medications that make the skin light sensitive should not be consumed for 2 weeks before treatment. Areas where dental work has been completed may be more sensitive and should also be expressed prior to treatment.
Steps to take after treatment
After the treatment, the skin may become uncomfortable with irritation, swelling and/or redness, feeling like sunburn. This sensation typically resolves within an hour after treatment. However, if skin is especially sensitive, it may take longer to resolve. It is important to not scrub or agitate the skin with aggressive products until the skin has healed. The team at the Williams Rejuva Center recommends using a product containing growth factors to help facilitate healing and growth of healthy skin cells after elos skin rejuvenation treatments. Makeup can be worn 12 hours after treatment. A broad spectrum sunblock should be applied daily prior to sun exposure.
After IPL/RF treatment of hyperpigmentation, the brown spots will initially get darker before they ultimately exfoliate off naturally. These spots can appear in the days following an IPL/RF treatment. They should not be picked or scrubbed off, just let them fall off naturally. “Grid lines” are common after the Sublative treatment. These grid lines will appear darker and feel raised over the 1-5 days following a sublative treatment. Do not pick or scrub these spots off; just let them exfoliate off naturally.
The elos Plus skin rejuvenation system provides many benefits that standard IPL/Infrared/RF treatments cannot deliver. The specialized staff at the Williams Rejuva Center can assist you in scheduling a consultation. During the consultation an evaluation will be completed and the benefits and risks will be explained. Question and Answer Section
Is the elos plus rejuvenation treatment painful?
Most patients do not find this treatment to be painful. The skin will be prepped prior to the treatment and if needed a topical anesthetic can be applied. For treatment with the IPL/RF applicator and Sublime applicator the skin will be cleansed and then a thin layer of cool gel applied. The IPL/RF applicator feels like a hot rubber band snapping on the skin and then comforted by the cool sapphire tip of the applicator. The Sublime applicator feels like a very warm massage as it builds heat to stimulate collagen production. The Sublative treatment is performed on dry skin. It feels like a “sting” or “pinch” sensation and is very tolerable with the application of topical numbing cream.
Is this only safe for the face?
The face is the most common area to be treated. The face typically sustains the most damage because of the frequency that it is exposed to the sun. However, any area of the body can be treated. Other areas that commonly are affected by sun damage include the hands, neck, chest and shoulders. It is not advisable to treat areas where hair is prevalent because of risk of temporary hair loss in the area treated.
Is this treatment safe for darker skin tones?
Anyone who would like to improve the quality and characteristics of their skin can benefit from an elos treatment. Although this treatment can be ideal for most patients, it is not ideal for all patients. Those with darker skin tones may or may not be candidates for the IPL/RF applicator treatment. All patients must be evaluated by a provider prior to treatment. Dr. Slaughter specializes in treating patients with darker skin tones and will recommend a plan to maximize results and minimize risk for these specific patients.
How long will recovery be?
The most important aspect of post treatment is to avoid sun exposure. It is very important to avoid sun exposure for at least 1 week post treatment and wear a broad spectrum spf of at least 30 daily. Makeup can be worn 12 hours after Sublative and immediately after IPL/RF and Sublime.
Immediately after an IPL/RF treatment, the skin may be red and feel like sunburn. Any brown spots will get darker over the 1-5 days after a treatment. The spots will fall off naturally and this can take up to 2 weeks for some patients. The spots on the face will fade the quickest while spots on other areas of the body may take up to 4wks to fade completely. Makeup can be worn to even out the skin during this process.
Immediately after a Sublative treatment, the skin is red and hot like sunburn. The next day grid marks will appear and may feel raised like little “scabs”. Do not pick at these scabs. They will darken over the next few days and will exfoliate off naturally in about a week. Makeup can be worn 12 hrs after this treatment to help even out the skin tone during this process.
How often do I need to get this treatment performed?
Although the skin may improve after 1 treatment, it is recommended, and most patients are happiest, when they receive a series of 4 treatments spaced approximately 4 weeks apart (2 weeks apart for Sublime). After a series, maintenance of 1-2 treatments per year is recommended.
When can I expect to see results from Sublime Treatment?
A lot of patients see results after their first treatment. On average, most results appear over a period of three to six months (it takes time for collagen to grow), but some patients notice results immediately after treatment. Like most aesthetic procedures, maintenance treatments may be necessary one to two times a year to enhance and maintain results.
When can I expect to see results from Sublative Treatment?
As with all skin-rejuvenation treatments, long-term results will vary depending on the individual, the number of treatments, and the conditions being treated. Full results are usually experienced anywhere from three to six months following your last treatment. Maintenance treatments may be required over time. Most patients choose to undergo maintenance treatment every six to twelve months.
When can I expect to see results from IPL/RF Treatment?
Most patients start to see some results after the first treatment. While many patients see great results after the first session, it still takes 2-4 treatments to obtain the results you desire. All patients notice a consistent improvement in the appearance of their skin. The degree of improvement is gradual and persistent. Since the aging process continues after your treatments, maintenance treatments may prevent the return of your skin imperfections. Depending much on the severity of skin problems, most people notice about a 50-75% improvement after a series of treatments.
