How Does Kybella® Work?

kybella injectionKybella® is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment for patients over the age of 18 that can improve moderate to severe submental fullness (i.e. fat deposits between the neck and chin) due to diet- and exercise-resistant fat. Some refer to this as having a double chin.

Kybella® is a non-human and non-animal formulation of deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally occurring molecule in the body. Normally, the acid produced in the human body aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. We all know that the key to sustaining good health and body function (not to mention our physiques) are healthy lifestyle habits, and diet and exercise form the first line of defense against unwanted fat.

Unfortunately, these measures will only shrink fat cells, not destroy them. Depending on other factors such as genetics and age, even the most disciplined and fittest among us have trouble shedding localized pockets of fat with such measures. Diet- and exercise-resistant fat deposits in the submental region is very common, as it can be particularly difficult to reduce.

Localized administration of Kybella® into the submental region will help in the breakdown of this fat deposit by triggering the rupture of fat cell membranes. This process of disruption of cells by an external agent is known as cytolysis, or osmotic lysis.

Once their membranes are ruptured, these fat cells will no longer be able to cohesively hold themselves together, and will die. The leftover matter will be absorbed and flushed out through the body’s natural processes.

Because the deoxycholic acid in Kybella® is so similar to that naturally found in the body, there is little chance of rejection or adverse reaction. A treatment session takes about 15 minutes to a half hour to complete, depending on the number of doses to be administered and the patient’s unique chin profile.*

Apart from experiencing common but temporary injection-related side effects (such as swelling and/or firmness, bruising, tenderness or numbness, pain, or redness), most patients are able to return to their usual routines soon after a Kybella® treatment session. Side effects typically subside within a few weeks after treatment.*

The total number of Kybella® treatment sessions required also varies from patient to patient and depends on a number of factors, such as the patient’s existing chin profile, the results they would like to achieve, and how they respond to treatment. For many patients, two to four treatment sessions (each spaced about two months apart) are enough, while some may require up to six.* Note that no patient may receive more than six Kybella® treatment sessions in total.

Initial results from Kybella®will start to appear within the weeks after a treatment session, and will continue to improve with further sessions. While no maintenance sessions are expected, the only way for patients to sustain their results long-term is with continued healthy lifestyle measures.

Kybella® is only recommended by the FDA and its manufacturer for the improvement of moderate to severe fullness or convexity due to subcutaneous fat in the submental region. The use of this injectable to treat subcutaneous fat in other parts of the body has not been adequately tested for safety and effectiveness, and is not intended to be a viable method of weight loss.

Complementary or Alternative Treatments to Kybella®

This treatment is effective for most adult men and women. However, patients with prominent platysmal neck bands or excessive skin laxity at the neck and chin area may not achieve ideal results. Some patients may retain the appearance of a double chin if there is excess, sagging skin in the submental area, which hangs low to create an unflattering bulge, especially prominent when looking down.

If one of our facial specialists determines during a consultation that this is actually the case, he or she may recommend a surgical procedure such as one of our facelifts, or a non-surgical procedure such as elos Plus for facial rejuvenation.

In some cases, loss of elasticity and volume higher up in the face may lead to the chin and jawline looking disproportionately large. In these cases, treatment with a dermal filler such as Voluma® may result in better balance and contouring of the face as a whole.

Kybella® may be used in combination with one of the above treatments if your double chin is due to both excess fat and loss of elasticity in the skin. If your goal is to achieve overall facial rejuvenation without surgery, we can treat a double chin (as submental fat can age a person’s face) as well as other wrinkles and volume loss with BOTOX® Cosmetic and/or dermal fillers.

Depending on a number of factors, your doctor may recommend CoolSculpting® as a more appropriate method to treat your submental fat.

A Final Note on Kybella®

During a consultation at our practice, your doctor will ask you relevant questions and discuss your aesthetic goals, after which an appropriate treatment protocol will be recommended to help you achieve them. An examination of the submental area will tell the doctor whether there is actually enough fat there for Kybella® to be an effective treatment.

The nature of deoxycholic acid is such that it can even dissolve other types of cells, making it crucial to choosing an injector with appropriate education, certification, experience, and skill to identify the dosage and injection points for Kybella® that will yield the best possible results. No matter which practice you choose to receive your treatment, do not hesitate to ask questions about the injector’s background in relation to injection and cosmetic treatments in general, and Kybella® in particular.

To find out if Kybella® or other treatments may be appropriate for you, it is important that you consult with a doctor who specializes and is board-certified in facial treatments. Talk to one of our specialists by requesting a consultation online or by phone at (800) 742-2797.
