Pulse Dye Laser (V-Beam) in Albany, NY

Pulse Dye Laser (V-Beam)Patients at the Williams Center for Excellence are often treated with the Candela Vbeam pulsed dye laser for rosacea, spider veins and scarring. Based on his extensive experience with pulsed dye laser therapy, Dr. Williams has found that the Vbeam can also be an effective treatment to heal bruising that commonly occurs after surgical cosmetic procedures and at times after Botox and Restylane treatments.

Normally, bruising can take several days or even weeks to heal, however patients that were treated with the Vbeam laser following surgery saw the bruises heal within 24- 48 hours.

Bruising occurs when red blood cells leak into the skin during surgery. When the laser energy from the Vbeam is applied to the bruised area it is absorbed by hemoglobin that is contained in red blood cells and gives them their color. The VBeam is thought to break down these cells therefore healing the bruise in less time.

Based on these findings, a research paper has been submitted to the annual meeting of the American Society for Laser Medicine in Boston Massachusetts held in April of 2006.

Rosacea Treatments

Rosacea is a chronic skin disorder that usually first strikes a person between the ages of 30 and 60 as a flushing or redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead that comes and goes. As the condition progresses, the redness becomes more persistent, small dilated blood vessels may become visible and bumps and pimples often develop. In severe cases, the nose may become red and swollen from excess tissue, and in many individuals the eyes also become irritated, a condition known as ocular Rosacea. Poikiloderma, redness of the neck, can also be associated with Rosacea symptoms.

Adding to the potential embarrassment is a common misconception that the flushed face and swollen red nose experienced by many Rosacea sufferers are the result of heavy drinking. Despite its devastating social effects, many Rosacea sufferers falsely assume that, like teenage acne, their complexion problem will eventually go away by itself.

Rosacea affects an estimated 14 million Americans. Topical treatments and oral medications remain the initial therapies used by Dermatologist. Despite these treatments some patients do not receive the reduction in redness they want. Dr. Williams and his Cosmetic Nurse Specialists have achieved remarkable results with the V-Beam Laser. This laser is attracted to the redness (hemoglobin) in the skin.

Treatment is performed with the Pulse Dye Laser during an office visit in the Williams Rejuva Center. Patients will have the option of having their treatments done with a lower or higher setting. The lower setting requiring more sessions, but with less downtime; or the higher setting which will cause purpura, a laser bruise, requiring less sessions, but with more downtime. Generally, the facial skin will be slightly bruised or blotchy for 7-10 days but can be covered with a light application of makeup.

Following Pulse Dye Laser treatment (V-Beam) you may be swollen and even bruised for a few days but after that fades the results are amazing. There is an immediate reduction in redness but the full result peeks at about 30 days. For most patients the cosmetic effects last one to one and a half years.

What to Anticipate with Laser Treatment for Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic condition initially treated with medications.  But medications are not effective for all symptoms that include flushing, redness and broken blood vessels.  If you have been struggling with these issues, laser treatment may be an option.  Laser treatment may provide dramatic improvement for these symptoms.

What treatments calm Redness and Reduce Broken Blood Vessels

Pulse dye laser (PDL) is the most effective treatment for redness.  A recent study found that people with rosacea undergoing laser therapy saw a 40-60 percent improvement in symptoms and appearance after the second treatment.  IPL or Intense Light Therapy is also effective for redness as well as hyperpigmentation.

What to Expect with Treatments

Typically, Laser Therapy and IPL Therapy require a series of treatments from 3 to 8 sessions four to six weeks apart depending on the severity of the condition, skin type and other factors.  Some patients require only a few treatments while others require several.  It is important to be evaluated by specialists who are experienced in our laser devices so treatments may be tailored to your specific needs.  Treatments usually require little down time.  Side effects may include swelling, redness, and occasional bruising that can last one to five days after treatment.

What is the Cost?

Treatments are not covered by medical insurance and can cost between $300 – $600 dollars per session but are often offered in a series or a package for optimum results and cost savings.

How Long is it Effective?

Rosacea is a chronic condition and while these treatments provide welcome relief of symptoms and improve appearance, flare ups can occur due to lifestyle choices and genetics.  Many patients experience dramatic improvement with our treatment program that includes laser treatment and education regarding triggers as well as appropriate skin care products to prevent flare ups.

Spider Veins and Broken Capillaries

Small or large facial spider veins occur as the result of the aging process and/or sun exposure. Some ethnic backgrounds are more predisposed to the development of facial spider veins; namely those of northern European decent. Minimizing sun exposure and protecting oneself from the sun is the easiest way to prevent the further development of additional spider veins.

Treatment includes a Pulse Dye Laser procedure that is performed during an office visit. The facial skin will be slightly braised or blotchy for 7-10 days but can be covered with a light application of makeup. The treatment is very effective; however patients having moderate to severe conditions may need more than one treatment.

Pulsed Dye Laser therapy is also very effective for the treatment of acne rosacea and its associated blush and facial vascularity.

Spider veins and acne rosacea can be treated with a lower laser setting resulting in virtually no down time, however, 2-3 treatments may be needed to achieve the desired results.
