What are the reasons that adrenal glands might produce a less than optimal level?

Question:

What are some of the reasons that adrenal glands might produce a less than optimal level?

Answer:

Low cortisol output is usually due to previous high cortisol output and the term adrenal fatigue really indicates that we were once producing very high levels of cortisol and the adrenals were really working on overdrive. After time, which could be months to years, the adrenal glands simple burn out and they are not able to maintain that high cortisol output and then you get a low cortisol output or adrenal fatigue. The reasons for high cortisol output are most commonly stress and this can really put our adrenal glands into overdrive and, as I said, they tend to burn out and are not able to rev up themselves to put out that kind of elevated cortisol and we develop adrenal fatigue.
