Breast augmentation, also known as breast enlargement and augmentation mammoplasty, is a procedure designed to enhance the shape and size of the breasts using a breast implant. Breast augmentation may be performed to enlarge the size of small breasts, balance breasts that differ in size, restore breast volume after pregnancy or weight loss, or to reconstruct the breast following a mastectomy. Candidates for breast augmentation should be physically healthy and realistic in their expectations.

Breast augmentation may be performed in a surgeons office-based facility or an outpatient surgery center.  Dr. Polynice, a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon preforms this cosmetic procedure as an out patient surgery at The New England Laser and Cosmetic Surgery Center. Breast Augmentation can be done under either Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC) or with general anesthesia. The procedure itself typically takes between one and two hours to perform, along with an additional two hours spent in recovery. Breast augmentation may be performed through different incisions, with the three most common being around the areola, underneath the breast, and in the armpit. Once the incisions are made, the breast tissue is lifted and a pocket created for insertion of the implant. The implant may be placed either underneath the breast tissue itself or underneath the pectoral muscle. The implants are then centered beneath the nipples and the incisions are sutured closed. Dr Polynice prefers to place the implants under the muscle because this gives the augmented breast a much more natural appearance and feel. Also placing the implants under the muscle does not interfere with mammograms.

After breast augmentation surgery patients can expect to experience some discomfort. Its generally recommended that patients take prescription pain medication to help control this discomfort. The breasts will be bandaged for the first two or three days, after which a support bra or sports bra should be worn for about four weeks. Patients should avoid wearing push-up or underwire bras during this time. Daily breast massage is recommended during recovery. Though the breasts may appear unusually high in the first few weeks after surgery, they will eventually settle into place once most of the swelling has resolved. Bruising and swelling will usually resolve within two to three. Most patients are able to return to work and other normal activities within a week, though strenuous  physical activity and exercise should be avoided for four weeks.

The potential complications associated with breast augmentation are as follows: adverse anesthesia reactions, bleeding, capsular contracture, changes in nipple or breast sensation, implant deflation or rupture, infection, mammography interference, and removal and/or replacement of the implant. These can be discussed in detail at the time of your consultation.
