How to Select the Right Surgeon for Your Deep Plane Facelift

Schedule a Consultation

Choosing the right surgeon to perform your deep plane facelift can feel overwhelming.

With so many techniques, credentials, and providers to consider, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. But when it comes to something as personal and important as your facial appearance, one factor rises above the rest: experience.

A deep plane facelift is a highly specialized procedure, performed by less than 5% of surgeons nationwide. This procedure demands not only technical expertise in facial anatomy but also artistry to deliver natural-looking results.

Before selecting your surgeon, it’s important to understand what to look for and how to choose the right surgeon for you.

What Is a Deep Plane Facelift?

Deep Plane Facelift vs. Traditional Facelift

Where traditional facelifts focus on lifting and tightening the skin, a deep plane facelift goes deeper to achieve natural-looking results that often last longer. In the video demonstration below, Dr. Williams explains what a deep plane facelift addresses versus a traditional facelift.

Benefits of the Deep Plane Technique

  • Elevates the cheeks, jowls, and mid-face for a natural lift
  • Reduces tension on the skin, minimizing visible scarring
  • Preserves facial expressions while providing long-lasting results

Why a Deep Plane Facelift Procedure Requires Expertise

Deep plane facelift surgery is one of the most technically demanding procedures in facial plastic surgery.

This technique requires precise navigation of deeper facial layers close to nerves and vascular structures, all through extremely narrow incisions that are all but invisible once healed. Only a small percentage of facial plastic surgeons are formally trained in this method.

The deep plane approach demands a surgeon who understands the deeper anatomy, not just the surface.

A capable surgeon can safely access those deep facial tissues without the risk of nerve injury, achieving a natural, volumized look instead of a tight or pulled effect so often associated with a traditional facelift.

Signs of a Qualified Deep Plane Facelift Surgeon

Board Certification

Always verify that your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS). Not all plastic surgeons specialize in the face.

Fellowship Training & Specialization

Look for surgeons who limit their practice to exclusively facial procedures. Surgeons with facial-only fellowships tend to have a stronger skill set for nuanced techniques like the deep plane lift.

Surgeon’s Focus Matters

Avoid practices that divide attention between body contouring, injectables, and surgery. Depth of focus leads to better outcomes.

Checklist – What to Look For:

✓ Board certification in facial plastic surgery

✓ Fellowship-trained in deep plane techniques

✓ Performs facelifts on a regular basis

✓ Offers an extensive before/after portfolio

✓ Uses accredited facilities

Advice From Dr. Edwin Williams: What Really Matters When Choosing a Surgeon

“As someone with over 30 years of facial surgery experience, I can confidently say that credentials and specialization truly matter. Patient safety should always come first — and if you ever feel uncertain about your surgeon, it’s okay to get a second opinion.”

In a recent Instagram video, Dr. Williams shared the top red flags to watch for when evaluating a facial plastic surgeon.

Red Flags When Choosing a Surgeon

  • Not board-certified in facial plastic surgery
  • Few or no before-and-after photos
  • Lack of educational resources or patient videos
  • Minimal experience with the specific procedure you’re considering

Questions to Ask During Your Consultation

A successful facelift starts with an informed consultation. These questions can help you better understand your surgeon’s approach, experience, and results.

Suggested Questions:

  • How many deep plane facelifts do you perform yearly?
  • Can I see before-and-after photos of patients like me?
  • What is your revision rate?
  • What is the expected downtime?
  • Who administers anesthesia, and where is the surgery performed?
  • How do you manage complications?

Dr. Williams offers extensive consultations designed to educate, not pressure.

How to Evaluate Before & After Results

What to Look For:

  • Natural-looking volume and youthful contours
  • Balanced, harmonious features (not tight or windblown)
  • Minimal scarring
  • Consistent quality across diverse patients

Examples of Poor vs. Expert Results

Avoid surgeons whose patients look overly tight, hollowed out, or dramatically different. A skilled facelift surgeon helps you look like yourself, just refreshed.

Surgical Facility Safety and Accreditation

What to Look For:

  • AAAASF or JCAHO accreditation
  • On-site emergency protocols
  • Board-certified anesthesiologist on staff
