Over the years, the skin on my face seems to have become different colors

Question:

Over the years, the skin on my face seems to have become different colors. I am interested in a chemical peel to even out the skin tones on my face. Can I get a chemical peel for this that will also remove some of the finer wrinkles?

Answer:

The short answer to your question is yes. However, it is important to expand on this a little bit since not all chemical peels work the same way. The type of peel that we have been using for almost 20 years is a TCA or trichloracetic acid peel. In general, the deeper the peel the more the recovery and the more effective it is for evening out the uneven pigmentation and addressing the fine wrinkles. For someone who has deeper wrinkles, especially the area around the mouth or eyes, it is important to treat those with a deeper TCA peel. Although we can use the carbon dioxide laser for patients with very deep wrinkling, the chemical peel continues to be our workhorse for uneven pigmentation and wrinkles. The typical recovery period in general is two-three days for lighter peels (10-15% TCA) up to ten days-two weeks for deeper peels (35% TCA). Posted by Dr. Williams
